In her later years my mother stopped watching nature documentaries.
It wasn't that she was trying to pretend that there was no violence in nature, or that animals didn't kill and eat one another, or wound each other in fights over mates or dominance or territory. She wasn't trying to pretend such things weren't the way of the world. She just didn't want to watch it anymore.
In these my own later years it's not nature documentaries that bother me since I've never watched many of them, but I do find myself avoiding certain books, movies and TV shows. I'm not trying to deny that there is violence and cruelty in the world. I just don't want to watch it unnecessarily. The news provides plenty to be disturbed by.
So I gravitate to cozy mysteries and TV shows. Undeniably there are really violent things going on but I think in these cozy type things you tend to not lose track of the fact that it's just a story you're watching or reading, it's not real life, you're able to maintain that distance.
